Win tickets to every event at Wembley Stadium in 2009
The sale is attracting heavy internet bidding from football fans keen to get a keepsake of the tournament that enthralled the country for a month, yet now seems like a distant memory less than four weeks after the final whistle.
Stadium flags and banners with the World Cup logo “A Time to Make Friends” are going on sale along with the signatures of all players from the 32 teams, a tie worn by the World Cup organiser and German football legend Franz Beckenbauer and the red and white boots of the midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
“Not everyone can fit a full-size goal into their home but there are enough people who could find a use for it,” said Jan Bröker, manager of the auction house Wilhelm Dechow GmbH, which is conducting six auctions across Germany this month on behalf of the World Cup organisers.
The proceeds will go to various charities.
“We’ve got the goals through which the Germans scored four times in the opening game,” Herr Bröker said with evident pride, referring to Germany’s 4-2 win over Costa Rica on June 9 in Munich.
Fans can bid for a shirt worn by the German defender Philipp Lahm and a pair of gloves used by the substitute goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who played in only one World Cup match.
The highlight of the first auction, in Munich today, is a ball signed by various celebrities who attended the opening ceremony, including Pelé, Schiffer, the former supermodel, Sepp Meier, the 1970s German goalkeeper, and Gerhard Schröder, the former Chancellor. The starting price is €1,500 (£1,000).
The other five auctions follow later this month in Kaiserslautern, Cologne, Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg, where stadium furniture and memorabilia from those locations will be sold.
Much of what is being sold is mundane — parking signs, fixtures and fittings from the various press centres, tables, chairs and welcome desks, in many cases bearing the Fifa World Cup logo.
They are likely to end up in offices or pubs, Herr Bröker said. The catalogue includes a full set of beer garden furniture for a starting price of €800. Less ambitious bidders may opt for collections of five small signs starting at €50 and including a “Verboten” and a “House Order” notice — a reminder of Germany’s rigorous organisation of the tournament. Herr Bröker declined to predict how much the auction will raise. “It’s very difficult to assess,” he said.
Today’s auction in Munich includes the tracksuit worn by Klinsmann during training, priced at €400 but already at €542 in pre-bidding on the auctioneer’s website. Prospective buyers have to be present at the auctions.
Klinsmann, who took the team to the semi-finals, where it lost against Italy, has resigned, which may increase the value of memorabilia relating to him. The bench he sat on during matches is also for sale.
