Celebrity Duets: 7 Perform

Wayne Brady, host of Celebrity Duets(S01E02) Welcome to the second review of Celebrity Duets, now on at its regular time. Thanks for sticking with me, despite the poor decision I made last week when I thought Lucy Lawless should have been the celebrity to be let go from the competition. From the comments I read you thought that she did much better than I did. Well, you won't have to worry about that now, because I will only be covering the talent portion of the show. The judging will either be covered by another one of our talented TV Squad writers (beautiful people one and all), or not at all.

So, without further ado . . .

First, Lea Thompson has fifteen- and eleven-year-old daughters? Damn, I'm getting old! Yet, she's still cute as a button.

Now, with that out of the way, some performers did better, some did worse. I thought last week's leaders, Jai Rodriquez and Alfonso Ribeiro, were good in their duets (with Brian McKnight and Jeffrey Osborne, respectively) but not as strong as they were previously. Concerning Jai, it may have been that fact that he was having some throat problems. I also liked Lea this week when she sang with Belinda Carlisle, but she just wasn't hitting some of the right notes with me at the beginning of the song. This may have been due to the very tight, very short mini-skirt she was wearing, or the fact that I was distracted by the very tight, very short mini-skirt she was wearing.

Three out of the four weaker performers from last week got markedly better this time around, particularly Hal Sparks and Cheech Marin. I'm not too sure what David Foster has against Cheech, but I think he handles himself pretty well when it comes to country tunes. I didn't have any problem with him in his duet with Clint Black. Sparks impressed me on his duet with Wynonna. For someone who has never had any professional singing experience previously he does a pretty decent job. The only problem I have with him (which Foster also has) is that he jumps from mellow to hyperactive in one song.

The third person whose performance improved was Lucy Lawless. Well, maybe it was just me listening to her differently this week. Other than missing some words, I thought her duet with Kenny Loggins went very well. So, that just leaves Carly Patterson as the weak link. Even though the judges thought she was okay, I personally thought she took Hal Sparks title of "white" when she performed I'm so Excited with one of the members of the Pointer Sisters. I found the duet to be pretty forgettable, and I have a feeling she may be the one to go. Then again, I was wrong last week.

Before I take leave of you I need to take a moment and speak about the judges. Actually, only two of them, because I think David Foster is fairly truthful and to the point in his judging without being cruel like Mr. Simon Cowell. First Marie Osmond. What the hell was going on with her play on the celebrities names? Rather than spending a couple more seconds to give the competitors some advice she decided to play the silly phrase game. It even looked like someone had written them down for her to say. And then there's Little Richard. Little, Little, Little. You were slightly better this week, but you slow down the show and you stop David from giving additional advice to the celebrities. Stop, breathe, and think about what you're going to say.

That's it for now. See you next week.
