SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- With a week to wait, Powell's Kaleb Asay didn't grow weary. Instead, he won the eleventh performance of saddle bronc riding on Saturday at the National High School Finals Rodeo.

His 76-point ride on Saturday, coupled with his 81-point ride from Monday, gave Asay the top spot in the average standings. His two-ride total of 157 was five points better than any other saddle bronc rider in today's short go-round.

More importantly, the ride assured Asay a shot at a national championship. The top 20 competitors in the average standings in each event move on to today's short go-round, set for noon at the Illinois State Fair Grounds.

In all, nine Wyoming competitors qualified for today's short go. In addition to Asay, they include Rock Springs' Megan Schrock and Lander's Katie Felix (breakaway roping); Wheatland's Dana Weiser (goat tying) and Treva Bitterman (barrel racing); Daniel's Andrea James (girls cutting) and Jake James (boys cutting); Evanston's Dillon Hoffman (team roping); and Farson's Seth Glause (bull riding). Hoffman and Bitterman are the only Wyoming competitors not in the top 10 of their respective events.

In Saturday night's performance, which marked the end of the second go-round, Bitterman won the pole bending performance with a time of 20.37 seconds.

Team ropers Jordan Steele of Aladdin and Tel Stephens of Glenrock finished second in their performance Saturday night, but finished just out of the short go in 23rd place. Also just missing the cut was Buffalo's Jamie Wells in pole bending; she finished one place out of the short go in 21st.
